Los Angeles Office of Racial Equity (ORE)

The LA City scandal has caused deep wounds across communities and exposed inequities in how city government operates. While the political and civic leaders involved in the scandal must be held accountable, intercommunity healing and a more equitable future will require more than just resignations. A new vision of city governance is needed, and that vision needs to be rooted in and shaped by the perspectives of BIPOC and low-income Angelenos. In collaboration with residents, OUR LA will work to realize this vision and advance a community-based reform agenda.

This November, LA County voters will have the option to begin a process of fundamentally reshaping how the County Government operates. Unlike the City of Los Angeles, which took a methodical approach over nearly two years to identify modest governance reforms, the County has brought sweeping reforms to voters in less than a month with Measure G. Like many others, Organize, Unite, Reform LA (OUR LA) is still analyzing these reforms and their potential implications on our communities.

California’s public schools and early childhood learning spaces serve children of all races, religions, and economic backgrounds, so they can grow and thrive. As advocates, we have long worked to make these spaces safe, inclusive, and affirming where joyful learning can happen for every child. But under the Trump administration, this diverse education system is under serious threat.

SEIU President April Verrett is a fighter for working people and a visionary leader at the forefront of building a modern-day labor movement that is anti-racist at its core. We are proud to honor April in recognition of her history of allying with the racial justice movement.  In her time as the head of SEIU Local 2015 and her service on our board of directors, she brought a fierce commitment to building a better future for Californians of color. 

Having dedicated most of her career to helping workers build power through their unions, April is driven by the conviction that unions give workers a platform to fight for more than wages, benefits, and working conditions. Unions help eradicate generational poverty, dismantle structural racism, strengthen our democracy, and generally improve workers’ lives and communities. 

She served as Secretary-Treasurer of SEIU for two years, leading the union’s strategic planning process to develop its plan for the future. As President of SEIU Local 2015, California’s largest local union, and the nation’s largest long-term care union, she fought on behalf of more than 400,000 long-term care providers working in both nursing homes and private homes throughout California.

She has also served as Executive Vice President of SEIU Healthcare Illinois and Indiana (HCII), where she played an instrumental role in holding corporations accountable and advocating for them to pay their fair share in taxes. At SEIU she has also chaired the union’s National Home Care Council, co-chaired the National Organizing Committee, and served as a member of the Finance Committee. 

Originally from the South Side of Chicago, April was raised by her grandmother, a Union Steward for SEIU Local 46, who taught her the values of perseverance, collective action, and community. She brings ambitious vision, courageous leadership and a life experience that fuels her unshakeable belief in the power to make change when we come together across race and that our power comes from our diversity.
