Sadalia King has begun work with our Director of Government Relations, Khydeeja Alam Javid, to develop and manage our legislative and budget priorities. In her role, she assists with the development and execution of Advancement Project California’s statewide advocacy strategy; and builds and maintains relationships with elected officials and statewide partners in the State’s Capitol.

“I feel it has been a huge blessing to join an organization that unapologetically aligns with my personal beliefs about addressing systemic racism. I hope to gain the expertise to address statewide racial inequities across various policy areas and a reputation as a strong advocate against the systems that perpetuate those inequities.”– Sadalia King, Manager of Government Relations

She is a Sacramento native who has worked in the Capitol community for five years. She has worked for the California State Assembly Speaker and Senate President pro Tempore and staffed members on several policy areas, including higher education, transportation, banking and finance, criminal justice reform, LGBTQ+ issues, women’s’ issues, and veterans’ affairs.

Before joining Advancement Project California, she advocated on behalf of faculty members in the California Community College System with the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges (FACCC). She found ways to continue equity-minded work for underserved and underrepresented communities. She encouraged FACCC to include requests for diversity in faculty representation for the California Community College System, ensuring they were in line with similar calls from the progressive leadership of their counterparts. Their collective efforts resulted in the Governor’s 2020-2021 January Budget Proposal with an increase of $15 million one-time Proposition 98 General Fund for a pilot fellowship program for improving faculty diversity at community colleges.

In addition to a consistent record at the Capitol, Sadalia is paying it forward. She’s become integral to multiple equity advocacy efforts in Sacramento. In the Capitol, she recently co-founded the Black Legislative and Capital Community (BLAC) Association, a non-profit staff association focused on the recruitment and retention of Black staff. She is also active in community organizing around the reimaging of policing and creating an equitable budget for the City of Sacramento as well as uplifting progressive young women of color to run for office.
