Happy Anniversary to RACE COUNTS!

Two years ago this week, we launched RACE COUNTS with our partners. It was dedicated (then and now) to helping community leaders and elected officials envision, measure, and fight for racial equity. The innovative web tool was the first to rank California’s counties by racial disparity across a comprehensive set of issue areas and indicators. We’re thankful for those who’ve used RACE COUNTS to advocate for more equitable policies in their communities.
In year one, we built upon the performance, disparity, and impact framework we developed for counties and rolled out similar data for the 135 most populous cities in the state. In year two, we took a step back and asked advocates what they liked most about the tool and what changes they’d make. In year three, we’re implementing that feedback to make RACE COUNTS better than it’s ever been before. To date, we’ve:
- Added a state profile page, enabling comparisons with counties and soon with cities.
- Added new indicators, including chronic absenteeism, got help, arrests for status offenses, and use of force. These indicators reflect the importance advocates place on school connectedness, mental health, and policing of our youth and communities.
- Added new linkages to the site. For example, it’s now easier to move from a scatterplot of data to its related bar chart and to get data by state, county, and city for the same issue area.
RACE COUNTS isn’t only for community activists and elected officials; we use it, too, to fuel our own work. For example, our RACE COUNTS research found that criminal justice was the most racially disparate issue area among all seven reviewed. As a result, we’ve dedicated a lot of thought and work to criminal justice campaigns in the years since.
We’ll continue to improve RACE COUNTS next year for both internal and external work. Here are some upcoming highlights:
- An easier to use website with more straightforward context, navigation, and linkages to data
- New county rankings (coming March 2020)
- Data for new geographies, including State Senate and Assembly districts
- More indicators, including in the Housing and Democracy issue areas
Thank for your support, and we look forward to sharing the results with you and finding out what you think!
