WE ARE CALIFORNIA
This moment presents our generation’s greatest existential fight, similar to the fight against fascism in WWII and the Civil Rights Movement. We are called upon to face with courage and conviction the attempt by MAGA forces to hijack our government, overturn the progress we’ve fought for, and send this country back to the bad old days.
Catalyst California has thrown its weight behind We Are California, a statewide formation that unites existing progressive and racial justice organizations and leaders with masses of previously unorganized people to defend our communities, and to pursue a shared vision of the good life for all Californians.
Begun as scenario planning to prepare for the outcome of the federal and state November 2024 elections, We Are California has become a statewide effort encompassing 250 community-based advocacy organizations that is creating a multiracial, multigenerational, multi-issue movement to build a future where everyone belongs, is safe, can afford to live, and thrives.
In the summer of 2024, our president and CEO John Kim, was asked to help form We Are California along with the leadership of California Calls and many other power-building organizations. Catalyst California has mobilized our capacities and resources to this historic effort, and our experts have devoted countless hours to: analyze the MAGA threat and decode its intentions so we can target our response, provide data analysis on the potential impacts of DOGE and other health, human services, and education budget cuts, and clarify what’s necessary to not only beat back the attacks but build a coherent progressive policy strategy for California.
In addition, our staff have helped create virtual and in-person teach-ins and actions to activate Californians on issues, collaborated on rapid response communication campaigns, and provided structure and staffing for convenings.
From the summer of 2024 until however long it takes, Catalyst California will bring our unique mix of committed people, impressive brainpower, and deep belief in the strength and beauty of our state’s diverse people to the work of We Are California.
