Budget Analysis Department
Provides budget research that wins public community investment
The Budget Analysis Department equips communities of color with budget advocacy tools to win sustainable investments that help all Californians thrive. Through local budget analysis, trainings, and campaign support, we dismantle systems that criminalize, create race-based disparities, and enable disinvestment in our communities. We advocate for equitable-raised revenues and do deep-dive analysis that offers a more complete picture of community needs, so policymakers can effectively allocate public dollars, so they serve all residents.
Examples of our work
California at the Crossroads
Our CA at the Crossroads report examined the harm H.R. 1, the greatest upward wealth transfer in modern history, will inflict on CA's communities. After assessing the budgetary impact, we analyzed current policy options to raise revenues, and provided recommendations for counties to help them protect their residents.
The Looming Crisis
The passage of H.R. 1, marks the culmination of efforts by the far right and corporate interests to weaken a multiracial working-class democracy by dismantling its safety net. Our Looming crisis brief examined their tactics and warned local governments of the need to prepare and respond to the growing funding crisis.
