Data & Research Department

Maps racial and economic disparity

Our Data & Research Department measures racial and economic disparity to shift narratives and power. Our tools include data collection, analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, community-engaged research design, and data visualization and mapping. We partner with communities of color to provide meaningful and actionable data and research solutions that are deeply rooted in their experiences. We provide clear diagnoses of problems, lift up promising approaches, and help partners craft campaigns based on these insights.

Examples of our work

The Eaton Fire that rampaged through Altadena in January 2025 burned 14,000 acres, destroyed nearly 9,500 structures and resulted in 19 deaths. We compiled a data dashboard that mapped the damage down to the parcel level, as well as tracking rebuilding efforts, contamination levels, and other indicators of the recovery.

Our RACE COUNTS initiative is built around a comprehensive, cutting-edge tool that hosts racial disparity data for over 40 indicators across seven issue areas. We provide critical data and analysis to racial justice advocates leading campaigns on economic equity, education, incarceration, and more.
